The global
averaged combined land and ocean surface temperature has increased by around
0.65 to 1.06 degree Celsius over the last century[1].
IPCC report showed that the observed warming since the mid-twentieth century is
“extremely likely” (more than 95% certainty) caused by human activities. In
Hong Kong, electricity generation is the major source of Greenhouse Gas (GHG)
emission, accounted for 69% of total emissions of in 2011.
Extreme weather conditions will occur frequently due to the effects of climate change which impacting to weather related events such as hurricanes, heat waves, drought, floods etc. Climate change is essentially a fossil fuel problem. Renewable energy sources is a key solution to generate electricity in a sustainable manner and, specifically, in mitigating climate change. According to Global Status Report 2014, at least 144 countries had renewable energy targets. Unfortunately, Hong Kong has no target on the development of renewable energy. The Electricity market needs to be drastically reformed to facilitate the development and adoption of renewable energy.
